Benchtop Energy Dispersive X-ray Fluorescence
Energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence, known as EDXRF, is a non-destructive analytical tool that allows quali and quantitative analysis. All elements above Mg can be detected at the ppm (mg kg-1 or mg L-1). The sample preparation is minimum. Usually, it only involves grinding for homogenization.
Samples analyzed by EDXRF:
  • Leaves and other vegetal tissues
  • Soils and mineral samples
  • Foods such as flour, sugar or salt
  • Liquids such as vegetal or mineral oils
  • Rain or fluvial water

Total Reflection
 X-ray Fluorescence
Total reflection X-ray fluorescence (TXRF) has the same components as EDXRF:
X-ray source, sample holder and X-ray detector. However, in TXRF these devices are displaced in a particular geometry. The X-rays are totally reflected by the substance, thus the signal/noise ratio is dramatically increased bringing detection limits to ppb level (ug kg-1 and ug L-1).
Samples analyzed by TXRF:
  • Soils suspensions
  • Liquids such as vegetal or mineral oils
  • Rain or fluvial water

Micro Energy Dispersive X-ray Fluorescence
Common bean leaf
The Orbis Micro-XRF Analyzers allow us to get advanced non-destructive elemental analysis with the flexibility to work across a wide range of sample types and shapes. At CENA, the laboratory has, specifically, the Orbis PC Micro-XRF. It is an upgraded model that is exceptionally well suited to analyze smaller samples or make faster measurements. It is delivered with an advanced, LN-Free X-ray silicon drift detector (SDD), enhanced color video camera with 3x digital zoom, and a 30 µm polycapillary lens. The Orbis PC’s sample positioner has an upgraded XYZ stage with higher-precision sample positioning.

Samples analyzed:
  • Leaves, roots and seeds
  • Rocks, stones and soils
  • Bones, teeth and soft tissues
  • Electronic circuits

Handheld X-ray Fluorescence
Handheld EDXRF is a miniaturized version of benchtop EDXRF. Nevertheless, the portability opens limitless opportunities. Elements from Mg can be identified and quantified. Our group is especially comitted to the development of methods to  access plant nutritional state in vivo, in field and real time. The equipment weights nearly 2 kg, it has an optical camera which allows to precisely determine the sampled area. The X-beam size probing the sample is nearly 2 x 3 mm.  In principle, any kind of sample can be analyzed.

Handheld pHmeter and Conductivity meter
Handheld pHmeter and Conductivity meter is a miniaturized version of benchtop pHmeter and conductivity meter. Because of its size and facility, it is possible to take it anywhere.
x-123SDD X-ray Spectrometer
The X-123SDD combines Amptek’s high performance X-ray spectroscopy components in a single package:

  1. XR-100SDD silicon drift X-ray detector and preamplifier
  2. DP5 digital pulse processor (DPP) and MCA
  3. PC5 power supply

The result is an extremely compact system with no performance compromise. It requires only +5 VDC power and a standard communication interface. With the X-123SDD and an X-ray source, anyone can rapidly obtain high quality X-ray spectra.
